English Philologist
The students will be placed according to their grades obtained from Student Selection Exam. For further information, please visit www.osym.gov.tr website. Each year, approximately 180 students are admitted to our department.
Admission can be made from the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council.
Students must be successfull and/or pass all courses and exams of Ataturk University.
The main objectives of the Department include enabling the students to acquire a good knowledge and competence of British culture, literature, history, and related subjects, improving their intellectual creativity and critical thinking, developing their research capacity and skills, and upgrading their fluency in oral and written English. In addition to the undergraduate courses, the Department also offers graduate courses with degrees of MA and PhD in English Literature and British Cultural Studies.
When the students have BA diploma, they can teach English in various courses. Those with pedagogical formation can work as English teachers in public schools.
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.
70 % attendance is a must for graduate courses. Examinations may be written, oral or both and may include take-home as well as lab and computer work. At least one 1hr mid-term and one 2hr final plus a completion (in case final grades are insufficient) examination is administerd by the instructor. Course grades are based on term work (40 %) and final (or completion) exam (60 %) results. ACourse grades are then converted to equivalent letter grades according to the following scheme: Letter Coefficient Grade (100 based) AA 4,00 90 – 100 BA 3,50 85 – 89 BB 3,00 80 – 84 CB 2,50 75 – 79 CC 2,00 65 – 74 FF 0,00 0 – 64 G (Pass) M (Exempt) D (No attention) K (Fail) E (Incomplete) Letter grades (G), (M), (K) are not considered in GPA calculations.
Obtaining 150 credits and having a graduation grade of 2.00.
