The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ataturk University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.
Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
The mission of Philosophy Department is to train people in a way to having a general formation regarding major philosophical diciplines, critical thinking ability, candidness and respect to different cultural values and life styles. Within this frame, by means of the trained people with their distinquished qualities and of conducting qualified scientific researches, the department’s vision is to provide contributions to the common cultural heritage, thought.
Graduates will find vocational opportunities in various public institutions (such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Social Services, etc.), private schools, Psychotechnic Evaluation Centres, Industrial establishments. They can enter the teaching profession at public or independent schools after having gained a Teaching Certificate. Furthermore, graduates may pursue an academic career by taking up scientific study at universities (at Master’s and Doctorate levels).
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.
In Philosophy Program, students take at least 1 midterm and final exam for each coursework. Addition short-exams and homeworks can be given. For evaluation, mid-term activities/tests contribute 40 % to overall grading. The rest is contributed by final exam score. All tests are evaluated based on 100 points and class average is considered. The lecturers convert numerical scores into 4-letter grading category. Attendance is required. Students are not permitted to pursue further year if sequentially graduate-point averages (GPA) below 2.00. Grades AA, BA, BB, CB, and CC taken for a coursework are considered “pass”. Evaluation of grades DC and DD taken for a course is subjected to students’ GPA. If GPA is above 2.00, grades DC and DD for a lecture are considered “pass”. Grade FF indicates “fail”. Lectures evaluated by grades M and G are not included in overall GPA calculation.
Normal duration is 4 years. Students must take and pass all necessary courses totaling 150 credits and reach a minimum (grade point average) of 2,0 before him/her can graduate.
