Bachelor degree in Sociology
High school diploma and placement through a centralized national university placement examination (YKS First and Second Session) are requied for admission. Please visit www.osym.gov.tr for more information. About 40 students are admitted each year.
Students can be accepted from the institutions whose equivalance is accepted by the Council of Higher Education, Recognition of previous informal and formal education in higher education institutions in Turkey is at the beginning phase. Ataturk University and hence the department are not the exception. However, exams are made every term for the level of English and thus previous foreign language education is recognised. Students, if they get passing grade, can be exempt from these courses.
Students must be successful in all courses as it is stated in Ataturk University Regulations of Education and Examination.
The sociology department aims to provide undergraduate students with comprehensive sociological knowledge and to have them gain theoretical and applied sociological skills and competencies for social analysis of the changing society. Conducting conceptual studies and field researches, the department tries to contribute to the solution of various problems of the country and the territory.
Degree graduates of department of sociology can work in Ministry of Justice, TÜİK, family counseling center as a sociologist and as a teacher in ministry of education or special courses if they have pedagogical formation certification.
Those who complete the undergraduate can apply to master and PhD programs in sociology or other porgrammes with the effect of passing scores in ALES exam and knowing English at a certain level.
In Sociology Program, the attendance record of 80% is mandatory for all courses. Students take at least 1 midterm exam and final exam for each coursework. Additional short-exams and homeworks could be assigned. For evaluation, mid-term activities/tests contribute 40 % to overall grading, the rest is contributed by final exam score. All tests are evaluated based on 100 points and numerical scores are converted into 4-letter grading category considering class average curve. Students are not permitted to pursue further year if sequentially graduate-point averages (GPA) below 2.00. Grades AA, BA, BB, CB, CC, DC and DD taken for a coursework are considered to be succesfull. Grade FF and Z indicate that the student failed. If a required or selective course is failed with FF, the course must be repeated fulfilling the attendence exam requirements. If a required or selective course is failed with Z, the course must be repeated fulfilling the attendence, assignment and exam requirements. Lectures evaluated by grades M and G are not included in overall GPA calculation. Education duration is 4 years. students must take and pass all necessary courses totaling 240 AKTS and reach a minimum (grade point average) of 2,0 before him/her can graduate.
